Colorful Cemetery in the Shape of a Hill
From afar, this vibrant cemetery shaped like a hill captures your attention with its beauty and uniqueness. Its design is a synthesis of the rich Maya heritage and the blend of cultures that have shaped Mexico’s history, from pre-Hispanic times to the present day. Upon closer inspection, you will notice that its structure is shaped like a conch shell, a symbol used by our ancestors to communicate with the gods through their breath.
The Seven Levels and 52 Steps
The cemetery features seven levels and 52 steps, a symbolic representation of the days of the week and the weeks of the year. Each of the 365 days of the year is reflected in the graves that adorn the site. Every grave is unique, with colors, decorations, and epitaphs that reflect the personalities and styles of those who rest there.
The Inner Spiral
Within the hill, a smaller spiral invites you to explore its interior. This structure houses 365 niches, surrounded by channels that allow water to flow from the surface to a central cross, creating the soothing sound of a waterfall. The combination of water and architecture symbolizes the cycle of life and death, a key aspect of Mexican traditions.
A Cultural Site of Great Value
This cemetery holds deep cultural value, reflecting the close relationship between Mexico and the celebration of the Day of the Dead. Every detail connects you with the traditions, art, and spirituality that characterize this unique festivity. Come and discover it!
